Four Philosophical Views of Mixed Reality Technologies: Implications for Research and Application
Sam Reno will discuss and present a model that aligns prominent research studies and applications of immersive mixed reality technologies in education, health and industry with four common philosophical views used in research; post-positivist, social constructivist, transformative, and pragmatist. Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies, jointly referred to as mixed reality (XR), can have very different applications. A benefit of this model is to aide in selecting the most appropriate type of XR for the intended research or application, and to reveal to XR novices some of the different powerful uses of XR.
For source material on philosophical views and research methodologies and published studies, the presentation will draw upon texts by influential authors such as Crotty and Creswell. For source material on research studies and applications of XR, the presentation will draw upon such sources as the conference proceedings of the 2019 International Conference on Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality, and industry publications such as by Deloitte and Accenture.
Sam Reno is a PhD candidate in the School of Education at Drake University and the program manager of performance improvement at MidAmerican Energy, both located in Des Moines, Iowa, USA.
